How does a beer keg system work?
The kegs that come from the brewery are pressurized with carbon dioxide. There is a big ball valve on the top of the keg and to attach the keg to the coupler the valve needs to be removed. The function of the coupler is allowing the pressurized gas to flow to the keg and make the beer flow out and serve it.
How do you use a beer keg at home?
- Clamp down the keg coupler to start the beer flow.
- Turn on the cooler.
- Turn dial on the top of the gas bottle anti-clockwise to start gas flow, one turn is fine.
- Turn on cooler at the plug and pour half a pint of product immediately.
How are kegs kept cold?
The cheapest way to keep a keg cold is by placing it in a suitable container and covering it with ice. Place the keg in the tub, surround it with ice and then top up with cold water. You can then either connect a pressure regulator and beer lines or fit a picnic tap directly to the keg.
Does beer stay fresh in a keg?
Pasteurized beers can stay fresh from three to six months. For non-pasteurized beers, you can expect the keg to stay fresh approximately two months. Each beer is different and storing your beer at the ideal temperature is essential for its preservation.
Is bottled beer better than draft?
A: Draft beer is definitely better than bottled, but canned can be better than draft. Even in a glass bottle, oxygen can leak in. So flushing cans with carbon dioxide and sealing a beer shut keeps it fresher for longer. Cans also prevent light from getting in, which can be an issue with bottles, even brown bottles.

Can a keg be tapped twice?
The good news is yes, you can tap a keg twice —with some limitations, of course. In the event that you’re using a manual or O2 pump, you’ll unfortunately only get one tap out of your keg.
Is it OK if a keg gets warm?
The recommended temperature to store your keg is 38°F. Try not to go too much above or below that temperature. If the temperature rises above 55°F, then it’s likely that bacteria will start to grow which will spoil the beer pretty quickly. If you keep the temperature too cold, the beer will retain its carbonation.
Are kegs cold when you buy them?
You can usually rent or buy these from the store where you’re buying your keg, but not always, so be sure to ask when ordering. Kenny also notes that you want to keep your keg chilled at all times, but not too chilled. “Almost all draft beer is unpasteurized,” he says.

Keg beer will remain fresh if dispensing with CO2, while maintaining the proper temperature and pressure: For non-pasteurized draft beer about 45-60 days. For pasteurized draft beer about 90-120 days. For quality assurance, most breweries now print a freshness date on the cap or side of each keg.
